In an op-ed for Euractiv, Civil Liberties Union for Europe Senior Advocacy Officer Eva Simon and Head of Video Advocacy Jonathan Day write if proposals to prohibit dark patterns and regulate targeted online advertising are not agreed to in final negotiations on the Digital Services Act, “the fundamental rights of European citizens will not be adequately protected.” Simon and Day said the DSA gives the EU the chance to fix a “broken system.” “The mass data harvesting that sustains targeted advertising is a clear violation of people’s privacy,” they said.
