In an op-ed for Stat, Matthew McCoy, Timothy Libert and Ari Friedman write that while Americans are sacrificing privacy amid COVID-19, knowingly and unknowingly, such sacrifices are unnecessary. While contact tracing comes with clear privacy concerns, they also describe issues with web tracking related to COVID-19 searches across various websites. The authors said user awareness can limit privacy issues, but ultimately, "the only way to truly prevent online health privacy risks is by adopting and enforcing policies that forbid tracking on health-related websites."
