In an op-ed for The Globe and Mail, Colin Bennett writes about issues surrounding the use of data in Canadian elections and how other countries are responding to similar concerns. Canadian political parties are still not covered under federal privacy laws, whereas Bennett notes parties in the U.K. fall under the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Bennett cites the results of the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office’s report on the use of personal data for political purposes, and where they could be useful for Canada. “Many of the same practices are also observed in Canadian elections,” Bennett writes. “And much the same conclusions could be drawn about the need for greater transparency, and for a more uniform set of rules.” Editor's Note: Bennett dives into the results of the ICO report in this piece for Privacy Perspectives.
