In an Op-Ed for the Huffington Post, Carlo Minassian writes that the recent encryption legislation proposed by the Australian government is based upon false assumptions and calls the proposal a “completely inoperable absurdity.” The legislation in question would require tech companies to provide the government with unrestricted access to encrypted messages. The assumptions, Minassian says, rest on the fact that officials are assuming the criminals they hope to catch use encrypted messages to communicate and that the government is capable of protecting the encryption keys from falling into the hands of cyberattackers. Minassian says, based on his experience, criminals use sophisticated means to communicate, and security of such highly guarded encryption keys is often left vulnerable to human error.
