In an op-ed for MediaPost, Marketing Town Founder Ken Leren explains how Apple’s decision to limit web tracking could impact political campaigns that seek to use targeted ads. Apple announced via Webkit an initiative to effectively disable the use of cookies beyond any necessary functionalities. Leren writes this tactic will make it impossible for political campaigns to send targeted ads, especially with the added restrictions from the EU General Data Protection Regulation. “While [the] GDPR makes political targeting dubious and potentially illegal, Apple’s approach would make it impossible to undertake,” Leren writes.
