In an op-ed for Fortune, Okta CEO Todd McKinnon questions whether “accept cookies” banners on websites are working or if they undermine user privacy. McKinnon writes the banners “create a false perception of privacy at the user’s expense.” User experience and innovation, not compliance, should be at the forefront in approaching consent, he writes, suggesting cookie consent be obtained within the browser, “eliminating the need for individual websites to notify visitors” and enabling users to track their consent.
