Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario Patricia Kosseim issued a statement regarding her office's stance on a $2 million investment toward updating Ontario's closed-circuit television systems. Kosseim said while the systems are a useful public safety tool, CCTV's collection of personal data on unsuspecting individuals "can create a chilling effect on freedoms and liberties when taken too far." She also urged entities exploring these updates to consult her office "to ensure appropriate policies, procedures, and training are in place to safeguard the personal information they collect."
