In response to a government discussion paper on privacy reform, the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario said “the opportunity is now” for a “made-in-Ontario private sector privacy law.” IPC Patricia Kosseim said the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted “the urgent need for clear privacy and security guardrails” and “significant regulatory gaps” require urgent attention. Kosseim said a modern privacy framework includes transparency and accountability, an emphasis on individual privacy rights, and a broad range of enforcement mechanisms.
