IT World Canada reports the Ontario Court of Appeal set a precedent for future data breach lawsuits with a recent decision on a 2017 breach claim against Equifax. The court ruled against plaintiffs who sued based on intrusion of privacy, noting those grounds can't be used against companies and their ability to prevent hackers from accessing databases. However, the court indicated future data breach cases can be brought on other grounds, including negligence and breach of contract, if actual financial loss stemming from the breach can be proven.
