In an ongoing battle between law enforcement and the tech community, a number of law enforcement officials and at least one U.S. senator contend that technology researchers and privacy advocates must demonstrate “exactly, specifically and technically” how proposed government “backdoors” to encrypted communications would undermine data security, Defense One reports. The comments were made last week during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing featuring a number of current and former law enforcement officials. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called for “more hearings” on the issue and warned that members of the technology community would be forced to testify. “Even if they don’t want to come here,” he said. “This committee has subpoena power.”
