The Office of the Director of National Intelligence released its third annual transparency report. The report offers statistics about the frequency with which the government employs certain national security authorities, according to a press release. The release follows President Barack Obama’s 2013 direction to the intelligence community that it both declassify and make public data on U.S. surveillance activities to the extent that it was possible while still protecting national security data. Further, the USA FREEDOM Act of 2015 codified the statistics published in the DNI’s annual reports. The release covers “information concerning United States person search terms and queries of certain unminimized, [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act]-acquired information,” in addition to unique identifiers from FISA orders.
