The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights has released guidance on properly disposing technology containing financial and protected health information, Health Data Management reports. The OCR’s guidance examines the different devices potentially holding sensitive health information, as well as the costs a health care organization could face if a data breach were to occur due to the improper disposal of technology. The guidance also offers 10 areas health care organizations should consider when those devices are to be eliminated, such as whether the organization’s data disposal plan is up to date, what data the company holds and where is it stored, and the logistics and security controls of moving the devices.
