The U.S. Office for Civil Rights announced the Department of Health and Human Services has reached an $85,000 settlement with Florida-based Korunda Medical over potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. A Korunda patient alleged the company did not transfer electronic patient records in a proper or timely manner, which violates HIPAA's provisions on right of access. "We hope our shift to the imposition of corrective actions and settlements under our Right of Access Initiative will finally wake up healthcare providers to their obligations under the law," OCR Director Roger Severino said.
