U.S. President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced efforts to strengthen protections against cyber threats by creating a joint cybersecurity unit between law enforcement and intelligence agencies, Bloomberg reports. Cameron is urging Obama to force companies that encrypt communications to allow law enforcement to monitor suspect communications to protect against terrorism. Obama has said traditional wiretap laws “have to be updated” and how that’s done “needs to be debated” in both countries. The Christian Science Monitor reports on calls by some in Europe to increase protections against terrorism that could include more broad surveillance activities in the wake of attacks in Paris earlier this month. In the U.S., a Washington Post-ABC News poll reveals that a majority of U.S. citizens (63 percent) are willing to give up some privacy for increased security against terrorism.
