ZDNet reports the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has published its quarterly data breach notification report, which showed 62% of the 245 notifications were either malicious or criminal attacks. The report also showed 70% of breaches came through cyberattacks, while 84% involved instances of human error that allowed hackers access to information. "The fact that there is a human factor involved in so many cases demonstrates the need for staff training to increase awareness of cyber risks and to take the necessary precautions," Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner Angelene Falk said. OAIC also announced a new reporting scheme for notifiable data breaches in which reports will be filed every six months instead of quarterly.
