The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner will receive AU$9.3 million over the next four years, ZDNet reports. The OAIC has struggled over the past couple of years due to lack of funding, but has been given new life thanks to the 2016-17 Australian Federal Budget. The budget papers stated, "$6.7 million per year for privacy functions will be transferred to the OAIC from the Australian Human Rights Commission, and $0.6 million per year will be transferred from the Attorney-General's Department for freedom of information functions." Investigating data breaches is the primary objective of the OAIC, but Australia currently lacks any data breach notification laws. Despite efforts to have laws implemented by the end of 2015, no such laws are in place.
