The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office concluded a joint investigation into the personal information handling practices of Clearview AI. The OAIC said it determined Clearview failed to comply with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 by scraping Australians’ “biometric information from the web and disclosing it through a facial recognition tool.” Clearview AI is ordered to cease collecting facial images and biometric templates from Australians and destroy existing images. The U.K. ICO is now considering any appropriate “formal regulatory action” under U.K. laws.
