In his keynote address at the IAPP ANZ Summit in Sydney, Australia, New Zealand Privacy Commissioner John Edwards discussed the dominant position of big tech and a need for a harmonized approach among all the country's privacy regulators to combat and rein in that power. Edwards spoke of a "'they are one, and we are many' problem," which refers to consumers and regulators being challenged by big tech's unified "formula for the data economy" because of a difference in values and opinions. Edwards went on to suggest transparency and an "open, clear and honest disclosure of the data consequences of any given engagement" could be the answer to the challenges.
