The New Zealand Parliament has passed the Privacy Bill, which will enter into force Dec. 1. The bill, approved after its third reading, repeals the Privacy Act of 1993. Notable provisions include criminal offenses worth up to $10,000, compliance orders, mandatory data breach notification requirements and obligations to uphold reasonable data safeguards. "The new Privacy Act provides a modernized framework to better protect New Zealanders’ privacy rights in today’s environment," New Zealand Privacy Commissioner John Edwards said in a statement.
