Radio New Zealand reports the country's official data agency, Stats NZ, and phone companies are teaming up on new location-tracking technology. A pilot of the technology, which focuses on population density, will launch in July and provide Stats NZ with information on an hourly basis. Emergency planning and the tourism sector are among the areas the software will cover. New Zealand Statistics Minister James Shaw said he knew public perception issues were possible but has put forth full confidence that the system will not infringe on personal privacy.
