The New South Wales Information and Privacy Commission announced the Department of Communities and Justice has released a discussion paper for mandatory reporting of data breaches by public agencies in the state. The department seeks public consultation on the proposed requirement to notify the NSW privacy commissioner and affected individuals of a breach and on the operation of the notification scheme. Breach reporting isn't currently mandatory in the Australian state. The discussion paper comes after the NSW opposition party introduced a bill in June that called for mandatory breach notifications for government agencies.
