Police officers in New South Wales are testing the federal government's facial recognition systems to access passport photos for law enforcement investigations, the Guardian reports. The officers are using the system despite the rejection of legislation allowing the photos to be shared after a federal parliament committee deemed in 2019 it did not properly protect citizens' rights. The Australian Human Rights Commission has said facial recognition should not be used in the country until effective legal safeguards are implemented.
