Amidst recent reports on the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) surveillance programs—including news of “Dishfire,” which collects information on credit card transactions from 70 banks worldwide—V3.co.uk reports on calls from European Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding on the EU’s need for a cross-national data protection law. Reding “made the call to arms during a speech in which she claimed the region's economy will suffer unless new uniform data protection laws are created,” the report states. The recent Dishfire reports, meanwhile, indicate the NSA targeted transaction information from large credit card companies on customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
