Tēnā koutou katoa, and greetings to you all!

Welcome to another week of Asia-Pacific privacy in review.  And what a week!

We experienced a memorable, collective “at last” moment, when Timothy Pilgrim’s formal appointment to the Australian Information Commissioner role was announced.  And since then, as you will see in this issue, we’ve been entertained by the Australian government’s efforts to cram three very important jobs into one. Still, that’s not really unusual for privacy officers, is it?

The week saw yet another household name fall to the data breach sword.  Yahoo’s data breach has dominated privacy discussion and probably will for a while.  We offer several perspectives, all worthy of consideration.

WhatsApp is back in the news, under the spotlight in India and in the U.S., and the poor folks at the Australian Bureau of Statistics are back in the news again, with a fresh issue this time. Will their pain not go away?

I’ll leave you to read on through the gory details, reflect on the regulatory reactions, and enjoy the rest of another rich roundup (including some good news!)
