So here it is—another year over. And what a year, too! The IAPP kicked it off by hosting an expert panel discussion at a renowned Brussels event in January: The panel focused on privacy for professionals instead of privacy professionals. In other words, how privacy has moved from being a very specific area of professional specialisation to an extremely broad issue impacting any professional who touches data. Which nowadays, if you really think about it, means virtually anyone.

Much of the work the IAPP has been doing in the past year has been dictated by this transition in the perception of privacy, but that doesn’t mean that the core privacy community has shrunk. Quite the opposite, in fact. In 2014, IAPP Europe members exceeded 2,000 and our flagship European event, the Data Protection Congress, has been the largest and most successful yet. As I write, I feel like I am starting to repeat myself, but that can only mean that our European community—once a regional extension of those U.S.-based multinationals—has been growing consistently and possibly beyond our own expectations. Personally, I feel privileged to have been part of that growth.

In my end-of-year letter last December, I wrapped up 2013 by mentioning some of the main events that had characterised the 12 months behind me. This year, I won’t need to do that, as my brilliant colleagues on the IAPP Publications Team have already thought about it, with compilations of the year’s top stories from The Privacy Advisor, Privacy Tracker and Privacy Perspectives, so all I can do is point you to them.

All that’s left for me to do is to wish you a happy holiday season and a wonderful 2015!
