Look at my picture. I’m as white as white can be. I don’t even have any hair to shield my whiteness. I can’t even pretend to know what it’s like to suffer from racism.
Nor can I pretend that what’s happening across the border doesn’t happen to Canadians or that it doesn’t happen across industries.
What I can do – what we can all do — is listen to those who have endured injustice and speak out when we witness it ourselves.
As a general statement, my sense and hope within the privacy industry is that it is more progressive. We have lots of diversity and I like to think we allow everyone to advance their privacy profession regardless of race, sex, religion or sexuality.
However, I’m also not naïve, and I know we have to do more to ensure that all barriers are removed entirely. I’m hopeful that all the dialogue shaping every facet of society these past few days translates into this much needed change for the better.
That’s my message for this week and I feel lucky to have a channel through which I can reach out on an important topic like this and help encourage positive change. I hope you join me in reaching out and speaking up in the fight to put an end to racism. Clearly, we need to do better.
