Dear privacy pros,

Happy Privacy Awareness Week! I hope you have found ways to commemorate the special occasion wherever you are based. For those of us in Singapore, I believe there is still an opportunity to register for some of the events featured on the Personal Data Protection Commission's website.

I have covered ChatGPT and generative artificial intelligence technology a couple of times in earlier letters. Having tested GPT-4 a bit more since the last introduction, I am amazed by the vast improvement the field has seen in such a short period. While the tasks I am throwing at it are probably too mundane and simple, like translating the lyrics of Chinese songs into English in a bid to get my boys more interested in the language, the quality and accuracy of the output GPT-4 generates, compared to earlier iterations, is simply astounding.

ChatGPT has seen explosive growth, acquiring 100 million active users within two months of its launch. I believe the adoption of such AI tools will continue to grow exponentially as the technology matures and plugins are progressively rolled out so it can be utilized within the apps people already use with less friction. Imagine a day when you can simply type out what you hope to achieve within a box in Microsoft Excel and the software automatically slices and dices the data in a spreadsheet, reorganizing and visualizing the data so you can immediately extract the desired business insights. No more pivot tables!

That day is not far away. When that day comes, we will also expose exponentially more data to AI tools or, rather, the companies providing them. And, as the number of use cases grows, we will likely expose not only more data but also more sensitive personal data. As a thought experiment, imagine a world where anyone can have a perfectly matched AI-powered human companion like Samantha in the movie "Her." What would we reveal to our new best friend, if not our deepest, darkest secrets?

Another thought-provoking example is the use of AI for predictive policing, which naturally brings to mind the "precogs" in the movie "Minority Report." AI systems have already been employed to analyze vast amounts of data and predict criminal behavior. While these technologies have the potential to assist law enforcement in proactive crime prevention, they also raise concerns about bias, privacy and erosion of civil liberties.

All around the world, policymakers, industry leaders and privacy experts grapple with the ethical and legal challenges posed by AI. The EU recently released a revised draft of its AI Act, a comprehensive regulatory framework that aims to ensure trustworthy and ethical AI deployment within the EU. France's data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, also released an action plan to support responsible AI deployment. AI features prominently on the agenda for the G-7 summit meeting in Hiroshima.

To better support privacy professionals, industry leaders, policymakers and academics navigating the complex landscape and to address the legal, ethical and social issues highlighted above, the IAPP recently launched the AI Governance Center. If you have not already done so, please take a minute to read the call to action.

Before I leave you to go through the rest of the digest, I would like to proffer a little postscript. I originally intended to demonstrate the power of AI technology by having ChatGPT draft the entire introduction based on prompts, anecdotes and other information. Unfortunately, that did not quite work out. Nevertheless, there is one paragraph in this introduction that is almost entirely drafted by ChatGPT and lightly edited by me for clarity. Can you find it?
