Norway’s data protection authority (DPA), Datatilsynet, has released a new report on the commercial use of personal data and the challenges that poses for privacy. “A data race is taking place in the media and advertising industry,” the report states. “New technology and the ability to gather and analyse large volumes of data are changing the way in which advertisers reach consumers.” The DPA said it “will work to increase transparency and openness in the advertising market, ensure genuine freedom of choice for users and give the user more control over his or her own personal information.” The DPA also provides recommendations for publishers and companies who engage in personal data collection, and the agency adds, “privacy policies must be improved.”
