Former Head of Wikimedia Foundation Sue Gardner and ProPublica journalists Julia Angwin and Jeff Larson have joined together to launch The Markup, a nonprofit news organization aiming to shed light on the “societal harms of emerging technologies.” The website will launch in early 2019, with The Markup planning to hire two dozen journalists after receiving $20 million from Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark, in addition to other donations. “In a healthy society, there’s an ongoing conversation about what’s in the public interest — a debate that includes legislators, regulators, the institutions of civil society, the private sector, and the general public,” Gardner said. “We aren’t having that debate right now about new technologies because the level of understanding of their effects is too low. That's the problem that The Markup aims to fix.”
