The southern French city of Nice is preparing to roll out a three-year test of a new data-collection system called Safe City, Bloomberg reports. Developed in part by French defense company Thales SA, the system is able to read license plates throughout a network of cameras linked to police patrols and traffic-supervision tools. In a blog post, Felix Treguer, a researcher and co-founder of the data privacy website La Quadrature du Net, wrote the project was “Orwellian,” adding it constitutes a “headlong rush toward social-control technologies.” Despite being against the program’s deployment, Nice Opposition Councilor Patrick Allemand said, “In the post-terrorist-attack context, it would be hard for people to understand how we could resist something that promises extra safety.”
