The Federal Trade Commission has announced that New Hampshire software developer Steve Castle has been awarded the top prize for the agency's internet of things home device security contest. Castle won for his mobile app, IoT Watchdog, which helps users with limited technical expertise scan their home Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks to determine if their smart devices are out of date or if their networks are insecure. Acting FTC Chairman Maureen Ohlhausen remarked on Castle’s award and the contest more broadly by saying, “The full promise of the internet of things could be lost if consumers do not trust their devices. By improving security for consumers, the ideas generated by our contest will help the IoT flourish.”
