ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted a photo of the New York Giants’ Jason Pierre-Paul’s medical records indicating he had a finger amputated after a July 4 accident, and critics of the move are calling it Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) violation, MarketWatch reports. ESPN disagreed, tweeting in response, “HIPAA does not apply to news organizations.” The report states, “HIPAA originally was designed to provide workers access to health coverage when they change or lose jobs. But a key provision of the law defines policies designed to guard the privacy of patients.”
