New Zealand’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner is investigating the distribution of COVID-19 patient details by the Ministry of Health following a recent patient privacy breach. The State Services Commissioner referred a report into the breach to Privacy Commissioner John Edwards to determine if further action under the Privacy Act is necessary. Edwards said the public needs to have confidence that sensitive health information “is not being distributed more widely than it needs to be” and done safely when needed.
