Privacy notices continue to be a trouble spot for organizations, as the dense documents often make it difficult for users to determine all the ways their data is being used. A pair of researchers aimed to simplify this problem by creating Polisis, a tool designed to automatically scan a website’s privacy notice, then produce a visualization to explain to users the different aspects of a company’s data-use practices. In this piece for Privacy Tech, IAPP Associate Editor Ryan Chiavetta, CIPP/US, spoke with Hamza Harkous and Kassem Fawaz, the researchers who created Polisis, about the genesis of the tool, as well as with privacy professionals and advocates on the ways Polisis could help enhance the work they do.
