The Future of Privacy Forum has released an infographic, Microphones & the Internet of Things: Understanding Uses of Audio Sensors in Connected Devices, to educate users on the range of uses microphones have in different connected devices. The infographic highlights how microphones are used by displaying when microphones are activated, what kinds of data can be transmitted, and the current U.S. legal protections for connected devices. FPF Policy Counsel Stacey Gray, CIPP/US, explained that “Information networks and devices that make up the ‘Internet of Things’ promise great benefits for individuals and society.” Gray added, “However, if we do not have the right guiding principles or necessary privacy safeguards, consumers will lose trust in the evolving technologies.”
