The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced a new set of rules to allow patients to access their health data on third-party apps delivered directly from their provider. The agency said the rules allow patients to make more informed decisions about their treatment as they move throughout the health care system. According to The New York Times, however, organizations, such as the American Medical Association, warn that without the proper safeguards, patients’ health data may ultimately be abused.
