The Department of Justice (DoJ) has announced a new policy for its use of cell-site simulators—known as stingrays—according to a DoJ press release. The policy requires law enforcement to obtain a warrant before deploying the technology. “Cell-site simulator technology has been instrumental in aiding law enforcement in a broad array of investigations, including kidnappings, fugitive investigations and complicated narcotics cases,” said Deputy Attorney General Sally Quillian Yates. “This new policy ensures our protocols for this technology are consistent, well-managed and respectful of individuals’ privacy and civil liberties.” The department-wide policy goes into effect immediately. Privacy advocates, however, say the new policy is flawed because of “substantial loopholes.”
