After a cyberattack on one of the most populated counties in North Carolina left many government computer systems compromised, county officials said it would not pay the hackers a $23,000 ransom demand, The New York Times reports. Officials believe the compromised information did not include personal information and plan to rebuild targeted systems from stored backup data. In a statement, Mecklenburg County Manager Dena R. Diorio said, “I am confident that our backup data is secure and we have the resources to fix this situation ourselves.” Diorio explained, while it would take time to restore systems, it was the only guaranteed fix, the report states.
