Australia’s controversial telecommunications retention law came into effect on Tuesday, BBC News reports. Under the new mandate, telecommunications companies must retain all user metadata for two years in order to help law enforcement conduct investigations of criminal activity. Metadata can include location, volume of exchanged data, device information and IP addresses. Attorney-General George Brands said, “No responsible government can sit by while those who protect us lose access to vital information, particularly in the current high threat environment.” International Business Times reports a survey by telecommunications industry lobby group Communications Alliance has found 84 percent of ISPs are not yet prepared to collect and store the required metadata.
