Conservative MP Theresa May promised that the Investigatory Powers bill will not be a repeat of its 2012 iteration, touting the newest draft’s removal of its “contentious” bits, the BBC reports. “So, for example we won't be requiring communication service providers in the UK to store third-party data, we won't be making the same requirements in relation to data retention on overseas CSPs,” she said. "And crucially, we will not be giving powers to go through people's browsing history. That is not what the investigatory powers bill is about." May added that she would promote “‘very strong’ oversight and ‘world-beating’ authorization arrangements for warrants to access more intrusive data,” the report states.
