“Human error” at the Australian Bureau of Statistics has led to the release of more than 5,000 contact names related to Queensland-area businesses, the Guardian reports. While those affected were not notified, ABS “counseled” the employees who contributed to the gaffe, the report states. The ABS has reported 14 breaches to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner since 2013, the Guardian Australia found via information released under freedom of information laws. While some of the breach reports “highlight errors in the handling of other surveys as well as failures to correctly de-identify data,” they “also demonstrate the ABS has taken a proactive approach to reporting data breaches — including relatively minor incidents where the recipients of emails are accidentally not BCCed — which is not mandatory under existing privacy laws,” the report adds.
