The Department of Health and Human Services has now had more than 2,000 data breaches reported since the agency was required to post the incidents on a public web portal in 2009, FierceHealthcare reports. The amount of breaches reported has ramped up considerably over the past couple of years. According to HealthInfoSecurity, it took five years for 1,000 breaches to be placed on the HHS “Wall of Shame,” while it only took three more years for the number of reported breaches to double. Hacking has proven to be the most common reason behind most incidents, as 40 percent of breaches currently under investigation from the last two years involved malicious actors breaching a system.
