Calling it a “first step,” Microsoft announced Wednesday it will honor takedown requests for so-called “revenge porn” in its Bing search engine and content access removal from Xbox Live and OneDrive upon a victim's requests. “Much needs to be done to address the problem,” Jacqueline Beauchere wrote in a Microsoft blog post. “As a first step, we want to help put victims back in control of their images and their privacy.” The company has also set up a new reporting site for victims to inform Microsoft of particular photos or videos in question. Beauchere added, “It’s important to remember … that removing links in search results … doesn’t actually remove the content from the Internet—victims still need stronger protection across the web and around the world.” Editor’s Note: A recent Privacy Perspectives post discussed how revenge porn is finally being taken seriously.
