Meta temporarily disabled some features, including avatars and photo filters, for Illinois and Texas Instagram, Messenger, Messenger Kids, Facebook and Portal users, Biometric Update reports. Illinois and Texas have laws restricting facial recognition use, and some argue the disabled augmented reality features can only work with facial recognition algorithms — a claim Meta calls a “mischaracterization of how our features work.” The company says it is working on a ”new opt-in experience” that explains the features are not facial recognition.
