Members of European Parliament voted 377-248 in favor of adopting a resolution that calls for proper safeguards around law enforcement's use of artificial intelligence surveillance and an outright ban on its public use of facial recognition. MEPs called for human supervision over AI systems to mitigate risks of bias, noting a need for human decision-making and data subject rights. On facial recognition, Bulgarian MEP Petar Vitanov said a ban is justified because "the technology has proven to be ineffective and often leads to discriminatory results."
