Members of EU Parliament held their first round of debates on the proposed EU Artificial Intelligence Act, Euractiv reports. During the meeting, MEPs agreed on two rounds of compromises “on administrative procedures, conformity assessment, standards, and certificates” for regulating AI. Much of the meeting centered on the use of biometric recognition surveillance use. The original draft prohibited uses of real-time biometric identification and social scoring. However, MEPs inserted allowable uses of the technology for identifying kidnapping victims and stopping “imminent threats.”
