A mental health reform bill could mean updates for HIPAA, The Hill reports. The legislation, introduced by Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA), would “encourage education around existing (HIPAA) requirements, with the aim of allowing family members to have more information about their mentally ill loved ones and better care for them,” the report continues. The bill is similar to one in the House from Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA) that faced opposition from Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) due to HIPAA changes, “and those issues are sure to come up during negotiations” on the Senate bill, the report states. “We’ve got our committee hearing in the fall, as we’ve been told, if we can advance it then, then we’ll go to the next step,” Cassidy said.
