With cooperation from Television New Zealand, The Intercept reports on New Zealand-based Endace's Medusa system, a tool that can "vacuum up vast quantities of internet data at an astonishing speed" and was used by the U.K.'s Government Communications Headquarters. Documents obtained by The Intercept "reveal the firm’s key role helping governments across the world harvest vast amounts of information on people’s private emails, online chats, social media conversations, and internet browsing histories," the report states. While the company says it helps keep its users' networks secure, "it has quietly entered into a burgeoning global spy industry that is worth in excess of an estimated $5 billion annually," the report adds.
