Mastercard launched a biometric checkout program with a pilot initiative in Brazil, Engadget reports. Other trial programs are slated to take place in Asia and the Middle East. Mastercard partnered with Fujitsu, NEC and Payface to set standards for paying with a scan or gesture, such as smiling in front of a camera or waving a hand in front a reader. Mastercard officials said customers’ biometric data would be converted into a digital template and encrypted to protect privacy.
