Presentations at the Defcon security conference focused on potential privacy harms of contact tracing apps, CNET reports. Co-creator of the COVID-19 App Tracker website Megan DeBlois said a review of 136 apps from countries around the world found most request permissions they don’t need, like a symptom-tracking app asking for location data. Security researcher Eivind Arvesen said in creating apps, governments should ask “How little data can I get away with to try to solve this concrete issue, and no more?”
